FCN1SL3: Kiwi Close Up ANSWER

Did this week's Mystery Monday puzzle leave you hungry for more? The answer is after the break!
This week's puzzle used a classic geocaching puzzle style: hiding the coordinates at pixel scale within the image. (For more information see page 194 of How To Puzzle Cache.)

The description mentioned getting a close look, and that hint was reflected in the title. By zooming into the image and looking around you can locate the coordinates. If you are working on a tablet or phone this can easily be accomplished by just enlarging the image on screen, but at a desktop computer you might require an image manipulation program or website.

There is really no method or shortcut to finding the coordinates, it is really just a matter of looking around until you find something. You can do a systematic search going across an image in sections, or down, but it's really a "Where's Waldo" (or Wally) style search.

Here are where the answers were hidden:

And here is a close up view of the coordinates as you would see them when zoomed in. The South coords were probably a bit easier to spot, you can almost see them in the regular view.

So, what do you find at the final location? The world's largest kiwifruit! The fruit stands outside the former Kiwi 360, a kiwifruit orchard and tourist attraction. Prior to closing it's tourist wing in April it attracted thousands of visitors annually and included a viewing deck at the top. The owners hope to open the tourist park in a new location at some point, but for now the giant fruit stands as a landmark outside the farm.

How did you do with the puzzle?

  1. This is a good puzzle, and the title is a fair hint. The brown numbers are still a bit tough to spot, even close up, but readable. When I first saw the puzzle I thought the seeds in the kiwi were some sort of code: morse, braille, etc. They weren't but you know, they COULD be.

Love these weekly puzzles - looking forward to the next one!

  2. I had the green numbers, and found what I thought was the brown location, but could not see the brown clearly enough to get the numbers. I tried everything I could think of to get them to appear: color saturation, contrast, hue adjustments, color adjustments, but just could not see the numbers. Maybe it was just my eyes, but no love here.
